20 year old fan blew the circuit board / the receiver board in the fan-fan and light unswitched -old house two wire system in the ceiling-don’t know where it goes-two black fabric coated wires coming into the box in the ceiling-a white and a black wire have been added to the end of the two wires- I hooked up the new fan and light with remote exactly per the directions / checked and re checked.
Dec 21, , Now, upon further inspection, there are 2 sets of wires coming into the switch outlet one from the left, one from the right. There are 2 black wires braided and capped, having one black wire leading out for a connection , one red left out for a connection, and 2 white wires braided and capped. There are also the 2 ground wires that have been braided capped and having one leading out for connection. It just seems that the previous owner had probably combined the two sets of wires to make one switch, when in reality can be made into two switches.
My friend says that there is probably another red wire, and says that the previous owner had probably cut it too short that it is unable to be seen. Does this sound right? If there is indeed a second red wire, I can then use the controller I bought, wiring it to the configuration you are giving me, right? I apologize for not providing a more “in depth” look into the switch outlet. Thank you for all of your help – I am sure learning a lot!

Now I’ve never installed a ceiling fan before, so this is coming together as it progresses. My issue is this, the fan has a remote which is awesome, but I don’t want to be completely dependent on the remote for functionality and I have little desire to use the pull chains. So I’m looking for best of both worlds, wall controls for light and motor, and remote for convenience. This is a new installation.
I installed the box and made two runs of romex may do three.

Last year reverse stopped working, and I believe that the receiver is starting to fail. Because of these 2 things, I would like to bypass the receiver and hard wire the fan. I have separate power at the junction box for the light. Are you going to use wall switches to control the fan and light? Is the wiring already in place for the switches? I could tell you how I would try to do it if it was my fan but it is not a way I would recommend.
It would basically involve reverse engineering and lots of smoke tests that might permenently damage the fan. With all the problems that I read about this reciever, I’d rather just elliminate it. I’d be happy if it was on high all the time. Thats where we run it anyways. I cut out the receiver in the base of the fan, but kept the connector and the wiring.
Now when I turn on the switch it turns the fan on and the lights.

Often times it is no more complicated than the wiring of a light fixture. As with any electrical wiring, make sure all wire connections are made securely with the proper size wire nuts, that they are not loose and that no copper strands are showing. Most “house wiring” should be 14 or 12 gauge solid copper wire attached to a 15 or 20 amp vAC circuit respectively.
Consult a professional if you encounter something varying from this and are not aware of how to safely handle it. Most commonly ceiling fans will have 4 wires, or 3 wires plus a ground. The black wire is the hot lead for the fan motor.

Ceiling fans have extra wires that can confuse the average homeowner and someone that is unfamiliar with electrical wiring. The confusion is caused by the wire colors for a ceiling fan, and the fact the fan has four wires while your ceiling fan electrical box has three wires. Knowing where to hook up the fourth wire when connecting a ceiling fan takes the confusion out of the installation. Turn the electrical power off to your ceiling fan electrical box if you have not already.

Welcome to Part One of our new video blog series; How to reset a ceiling fan remote control. I want to start with the W Casablanca fan remote control because it has proven to be one of the systems that needs to be reset most frequently. The Casablanca W is a handheld remote control that is used with the Casablanca Isotope and Trident fan models. Throughout the years, it has been in a few other models, but the two mentioned above are the best selling models using the W The problem in most cases lies with the receiving unit.
The receiver inside the fan loses its frequency setting and will completely disable the fan and light operation. There may be a simple solution. Why does this happen? The W receiver is very sensitive to any kind of power fluctuation. In other words, if there is too little or too much power going through the lines, the receiver shuts off.
